Poncho-wearing Pikachu Promos

The complete history of the Cosplay Pikachu cards

From 2015 to 2018, Pokémon Centers in Japan released a series of "Poncho-wearing Pikachu" promos. What started with Mega Evolution hoodies expanded to include villainous team bosses, regional mascots like Magikarp and Gyarados, and even traditional cultural attire.

The Hiroshima Debut

The "Poncho" trend arguably kicked off in earnest with the opening of the Pokémon Center Hiroshima in June 2015. To celebrate the location's mascot—the Red Gyarados—Pikachu appeared in both Magikarp and Gyarados ponchos.

These cards established the formula: Pikachu wearing a hoodie of another Pokémon, often with a playful or fierce expression mimicking the costume.

The Mega Poncho Era

The concept exploded in popularity with the "Strongest Mega Evolution" campaign. Pokémon Centers released a massive wave of promos featuring Pikachu dressed as popular Mega Evolved Pokémon, including Charizard, Rayquaza, Lucario, and more.

These cards were distributed through various purchase campaigns and special box sets, becoming some of the most iconic modern Japanese promos.

Villainous Teams

In the Sun & Moon era, the cosplay theme took a darker turn with the "Rainbow Rocket" campaign. Pikachu donned the outfits of the leaders of every major villainous organization, from Team Rocket's Giovanni to Team Flare's Lysandre.

Alongside the bosses, Pikachu also dressed up as Team Skull grunts, capturing the rebellious spirit of the Alola region.

Regional & Cultural Celebrations

The poncho theme was also used for specific regional events. The "Tea Ceremony" Pikachu celebrated the Kyoto Pokémon Center, while the "Comedian" Pikachu paid homage to the Manzai comedy culture of Osaka.

The Sapporo Snow Festival also received a nod with the Alolan Vulpix ponchos, fitting the snowy theme of the northern region.

The Eevee Poncho Collection

Not to be outdone, Eevee received its own line of poncho promos. A set of eight cards was released, featuring Eevee dressed as each of its evolutions: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon.

These cards feature colorful, vibrant art and were released as part of the "Poncho-wearing Eevee" campaign.
